Golf is a sport that uses a club to move a ball over a course. This is known as a precision sport with the player able to select from a number of clubs to assist him or her in getting the ball from tee to hole in as few strokes as possible. Golf is played on a course of 9 to 18 links, typically 18 links is a game, and 9 link courses are played twice to make a full game.
Early references to golf as a game date back to 15th century Scotland. It may be related to paganic which was a Roman game, chaugan which was a Persian game, or chuiwan which is a Chinese game. Related to golf is cambuca and chambot from England and France respectively. Golf was not considered more then a diversion when it was first noticed. The course with the longest known existence is the Old Course at St Andrews, dated back to before 1574.
While not related to the edge protector, or requiring stacking strength packaging and custom packaging solutions golf does require a course with holes that are designed with specific elements. Each link is made a teeing ground, a fairway, a rough and other hazards, and a putting green. The teeing area has markers to show the bounds of the legal tee area. The other end, the putting green has a pin and cup in the middle. The pin is often a flagstick.
There are many ways that are used to increase the difficulty of a link. The Hazards and Rough are only the most obvious. Lesser known perhaps is the choices made in the levels of grass which can impact how difficult a link is, even if there is a direct line of sight between tee and green. A link may be straight or doglegged. Sometimes a link is even double doglegged or bent into an ’s’ or ‘z’ shape.
The reason that a course is made of ‘links’ is related to the types of land used for laying out courses in Scotland. There they set courses on links land, land that is made of soil over sand dunes, which occurs naturally inland from beaches. Therefore the early seaside courses were called ‘golf links’. On these links rounds of 18 holes are played which make up a game. The oldest course in the United States was built at Downers Grove Illinois in 1892. This course can still be played today.
Golfers play using certain tools. This includes the tee which is a peg although originally the tee was a mound of sand. There are a number of clubs that can be used also, and a primary part of the skill in golf comes from reading the course and knowing which club will help the most when it comes time to strike the ball up the fairway to the green. The ball itself can be any number of styles or colors, and some players even have custom made ones. In some cases these are protected with edge protector pieces or shipped int stacking strength packaging as part of custom packaging solutions.
